[Original review]
Buddy read with the heart candy IA addicts starting Feb 7, 2015.
It'south official. I hereby declare that I have sold my soul to the Andrews.
♥ What I usually dear in a volume:
☛ Barrel-kick heroine & aggravating alpha male: hell yes.
☛ Badass activeness and gruesome fights: cut cut cut. Piece slice piece. Me likey.
☛ Bom chicka wah wah times: oh yummy.
💀 What I commonly hate in a volume:
☛ Romance: alibi me while I throw upwards in my mouth a fiddling fleck.
☛ Cuteness: yuck.
☛ HEA: please kill me somebody.
★ What Silent Blade features:
☛ Barrel-kicking heroine & aggravating alpha male person: so far so skilful. Well the hunky ass in residence is a scrap on the stalker side but he does DNF books. I'm in love.
☛ Bom chicka wah wah times: oh goody. Keep it upwardly you guys!
☛ Romance: ouch.
☛ Cuteness: man that really hurt.
☛ HEA: you have got to be kidding me.
Now allow's do the IA counting matter again shall we? See the little stars up there? Now count with me: i, ii, iii, four. Wait, that can't be right. Let's check again: ★★★★ Aye. That'southward right. My name is Sarah and I but gave 4 stars to a beautiful, romantic novella.
Before you ask, let me tell you that this is actually me writing this review. No, I haven't yet been possessed by a malevolent spirit. Yes, I'm however a cold-hearted cynic. What is it then? Astute example of Andrewsitis. Whatever these two write, I'grand doomed. I even like their cute YA short stories. Me + similar + cute + YA = {insert face up of dismay hither}. For all I know, if Ilona & Gordon started writing cereal box blurb I'd rave about it from dusk till dawn.
Of course I would accept liked more sci-fi and less romance hither. More action and less cuteness. More revenge and less HEA. But you know what, this is all also the signal. Because this was fun, entertaining and because I LOVED It.
So there. This day will be forever marked equally the moment in history where I enjoyed a cute, romantic story. Now I expect to burn down in hell. Or at least to disappear in a smash of spontaneous combustion. Poof!

3.5 starsAllow me aid set some realistic expectations here because despite the cover and the title, this is really a cheesy simply amazing dear story between a kick-ass heroine (who doesn't really kicking ass), with a really super cool power (but never uses it except to cutting inanimate objects in one-half) and a ruthless, selfish macho hero (who turns into a mush when love-struck).
"I never claimed to exist kind or virtuous. But for you lot, I will be."
"Wouldn't a more fitting punishment be sentencing me to a lifetime of making you happy?"
(Aw. That romantic, annoying jerk. Punch him or kiss him? Tough phone call. Lol.)
Every bit I was saying, this is a cheesy story in the guise of a sci-fi/ fantasy story fix in a world of implants and biochemical modifications on elite families technically chosen kinsmen.
Meli ( Galdes kin) when she was ten was engaged to Celino ( Carvanna kin) when he was 16. Both are against the engagement simply Meli beingness an obedient daughter that she is devoted her years studying everything about Celino to get a good wife in the future. She learned to have Celino and somewhen learned to love him too.
But Celino fought hard for his liberty past threatening his kin of excising himself from the family should he be forced to ally Meli. He got his freedom and told Meli he wouldn't marry her.
Devastated and heartbroken, Meli excises herself from her family and becomes a professional assassin. Before she retires, she has one last assignment- to assassinate well, surprise, surprise! You know who already.
For Meli, this is going to be the perfect revenge.
How she shall execute the revenge is for y'all to find out. It involves a lot of skin, and seduction and things a young reader shouldn't be reading yet so kids, stay away, okay?
The story ends with cheesy beloved confessions.
But to be honest,
P.Due south. The book is 42 pages short. A huge come up on.
My showtime Ilona Andrews read but certainly not my last.

Only Ilona Andrews could make a futuristic story nearly a Nighttime Horse assassin and her ruthless businessman target so heartwarming. This short story takes place in a universe where some families take biologically engineered enhancements embedded in their bloodlines, building an futuristic aristocracy ruling the planet. She is brought out of retirement for ane last job - killing the man who tied her down then ruined her life with a botched appointment. Meli decides to take him down revenge-is-best-served-sexy style.
This was a lovely break from the string of reverse harem books I've been trudging through lately. I needed some variety without the commitment that a heavy scifi doorstopper frequently requires. Silent Blade really hitting the spot.

This novelette isn't one of Ilona Andrews' best, but I nevertheless take institute myself rereading it a couple of times when I needed a quick IA pick-me-up, and I like it a little amend each time I read it. So. Maybe 3.5 stars? This 42 page fantasy romance by Ilona Andrews is nigh an elaborate revenge plot: In a world where certain families have been bred with near-magical mental and physical powers, arranged marriages are made to proceed the families and their powers stiff (a concept that the Andrews adult more than fully later on in their HIDDEN LEGACY series, beginning with Burn down for Me, but that series is set up on Earth while the KINSMEN stories are on other planets).
Eighteen years ago, a marriage was arranged between Celino Carvanna and Meli Galdes, when he was 16 and she was 10 ... the intent being that they would get married when she turned 18. Merely Celino always resented being forced into marriage, and when Meli was sixteen he rudely bankrupt the appointment, unintentionally crushing Meli'south general marital prospects in the procedure. She ended up officially excising herself from her family to avoid the shame, condign a skilled assassin who helps her family out periodically where she feels like a revenge killing is justified.
Now Meli's brother comes to her with one terminal bump-off asking: accept out Celino Carvanna, who's recently damaged their family'south business. The prospect of bringing him downwards is also much for Meli to resist. As powerful as he is, she has some inside information that volition assistance her get past his guards and protections. But what she doesn't programme on is the strong attraction that develops between them.
There are some cool concepts at play in this story and a few great scenes, but information technology'due south kind of a superficial romance, probably because of the short length of the story. I never completely engaged with the primary characters, and at that place wasn't enough to really make me buy into their human relationship or the motivations for their deportment in the cease. Because of this, the relationship (not to mention the sexytimes) left me pretty much unmoved. My biggest issue is a item almost the ending: (view spoiler)[Two years of no contact before she goes back to him?? And she basically just stalks him for the last six months of that time? It didn't ring true. (hide spoiler)]
The Andrews squad withdrew this story from the market for a few years and said that they were going to rework it, but it's on sale over again at present and I don't believe they made whatever changes. (If I'm incorrect, I'd dear to know that.) Read it if you're an Ilona Andrews completist or really savor SF romance; otherwise I'd betoken you to their novels or fifty-fifty just Argent Shark, a semi-sequel that works fine as a stand-alone read.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsSo after I finished reading BURN FOR ME, the first book in Ilona Andrews' new and amazing HIDDEN LEGACY series, I got to talking with another Ilona fan who had been told that the world-edifice in BURN FOR ME was similar to the worlds in the KINSMEN series and the novella, OF SWINE AND ROSES.
And I was similar, "Huh. I can see that." But it'd been years since my early OMG-I-LOVE-Ilona binge, and then I decided a reread was in order.
And hither we are.
Some time in the indeterminate future, when space colonization was the new Big Thing, humans began to genetically enhance themselves. They needed to be stronger, faster, heartier, more versatile. Some of these enhancements were tech-based, effecting only the individual, and some were biological, being inherited by offspring.
It was quickly realized that the advantage of these biological enhancements lay in their exclusivity. Thus, the biologically enhanced united and shut down all further biological modification.
And consolidated their ability. They were chosen the Kinsmen, and to maintain both the potency and exclusivity of their enhanced claret, the families arranged marriages for their children based on bloodlines and concern alliances.
This is why Meli Galdes was matrimonial to Celino Carvanna when she was 10 years old and he was xvi.
While neither of them was happy with the arrangement, Meli accepted it, simply Celino did Non. He worked the next six years to brand himself indispensable to his family, and worth more as an individual than the brotherhood with the Galdes family.
And he succeeded.
But where did that leave Meli?
An excellent question. And ane you will merely get the answer to by . . . wait for it . . . yes, that's right—READING the book. *winsome face*
Verdict: a quick, fun, and SEXY read. Yeah, I know information technology's Ilona Andrews, and aye, I know that fabulous every bit she is, she's non specially well known for sexy times, merely there'southward a first for everything, right? Highly recommended.

Is there anything by Ilona Andrews I won't read? Lol, JK. That was a pull a fast one on question considering manifestly the answer is no. SILENT Bract has been on my radar for a while now e'er since someone on my friends list substantially said that it every bit Hidden Legacy 1.0 and trust me when I say that I would gladly pay coin to revisit one of my favorite book series of all-time, even when written in a slightly inferior format. But until recently, both SILENT Blade and Argent SHARK were both out of impress, and I could only read the reviews of my friends, who were smart plenty to buy the books when they first came out, with envy. Luckily, both brusque stories are now back in impress, and when I saw SILENT Blade for 99-cents, I bought it immediately.
I can definitely meet the comparison to Hidden Legacy, although there's elements of The Innkeeper Chronicles as well. SILENT Bract is set on another planet, post-Earth, where humans have been genetically modified to take special abilities. The heroine of this story, Meli, has a rare cistron that allows her to wield what I think is an electromagnetic whip on her wrist that can make heads literally gyre, while the hero, Celino, is impossibly fast and deadly with a bract. The two of them had been arranged to be married by their families as children, merely Celino bankrupt off the engagement later he had become a one-man economic superpower, breaking Meli's teenage heart, too.
Now impossibly potent and filled with the desire for vengeance, Meli has decided to kill Celino at her family unit'south urging. It's easy to worm her way into his centre - when existence prepped for spousal relationship, she learned everything about him, from his favorite recipes, to his thoughts on literature, to what he prefers in a adult female. With her abilities, she doesn't need a knife to impale him; and with her unassuming looks, it'south all too like shooting fish in a barrel to cause Celino to let downward his baby-sit.
If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope - especially when the hero and heroine hate each other so much, they actually want each other expressionless. I know information technology's messed up, only I think such loathing between H and h makes for some really smoldering UST. I felt similar the world-building was very vague, which I guess is understandable in a short story, but the well-developed world of Hidden Legacy made me want more: I wanted to know why humans left Earth, why they decided to flip a giant middle finger to genetics Gattaca-style, and more than well-nigh how these two things shaped the very obvious hierarchy of genetically superior families on New Globe (or any).
I did not go that.
I'm guessing that maybe that disappointment is what prompted the Andrews to remove SILENT BLADE from publication in the start place, especially if The Hidden Legacy and The Innkeeper serial are both branched off from this story, equally I suspect. I'm kind of surprised they didn't take the opportunity to flesh these books out into a full-length novel, considering I think that this book has the potential to become a new fan favorite given enough love and care. As is, it's a good short story with an okay romance and an okay story, just is virtually as satisfying as a bite-size candy bar (need more).
If you're a fan of Ilona Andrews already, I recall this would exist a meliorate read because it's fun to endeavour and effigy out how it influenced other stories (*coughing*). Equally a standalone, it'southward only okay, and I probably wouldn't accept been very happy with it if I'd paid more than than $i. If you're new to Andrews, there are amend books to start with, like Burn down FOR ME or MAGIC BITES. This one is not recommended for the newbies.

This volume has everything I should hate...
1) A serious case of insta-love. The insta-beloved in this book was heavy. The couple practically vicious in love in ii days without knowing much about each other.
two) A very high-handed hero. Celino was total of arrogance and my-way-or-the-highway attitude. He was a jerk with zero overnice in him to give him some kind of weird redemption.
iii) It was a novella then the story never developed well. This is its most serious flaw in my stance. I hate stories that seemed too rushed and short and this one had information technology. If the book was at least twice its size it would have been so much better.
four) There was a desappointing lack of activity. I have come up to wait more than activity from IA's books and the volume promised to deliver that in the beginning but never quite did. I wanted a big show-downward at the end only didn't get it.
Simply you know what?? I don't care. I loved it. I don't know if information technology was because I accept a bit of a hero-worhip view of IA and my judgement of their work is prejudiced or if just something clicked nearly it, but in the end of the solar day the book just worked for me. I wanted information technology to be longer though so I could engage in the story more and go invested in the characters.

My friend was so correct. This story definitely had shades of Harlequin Presents, with a little Romeo and Juliet thrown in--the feuding families, not the starcrossed lovers.Celino is a butthead. A sexy one, but a butthead withal. He could not exist more of an arrogant, Harlequin Presents-type hero.
Meli, well she'due south definitely got more than brass than the usual heroine in that line. And she's completely badass. I take to admit, I would take liked it better if she almost tried to kill him before they got together. Is that wrong of me?
This was short and sugariness, and it fabricated me feel things. I felt Meli's rejection and cleaved heart, her loneliness at beingness jilted and fabricated unmarriageable every bit a effect. I felt Celino's confusion at finding the perfect woman, and non knowing how to get and proceed her. I felt the attraction and steam between this pair. I felt that their bond was stronger than annihilation that could keep them autonomously.
Ilona Andrews is a very talented writer. Her mode is brisk, atmospheric and involving. She has a noir feel to her storytelling that I honey. In this story, in that location is a bright, naturalistic grace to the scenes and the setting. I could conspicuously see the bright colors and odour the dahlias that play such a large function, taste the pink vino, sweet coffee, and fruity dessert pastry that Celino would die for. In marked contrast, there are skillfully-executed science fiction elements, painting a vision of the future on another planet where fighting families have formed business empires that bring a new meaning to the word cutthroat, all delivered with a cinematic poise. The sci-fi setting was a deliberate mislead on the part of the author, in my opinion. Actually, this is a story of an bundled-union couple turned enemies turned lovers that feels and so earthbound and familiar, although washed in such a unique way.
Silent Blade is brusk and sweet. Information technology'south not action-packed, then don't wait for that. Instead, it's a tender surprise of a love story that is delightfully old-fashioned, despite the futuristic setting. This was a real class human activity.

Certain there was insta-beloved and an blastoff male person extreme in this only I loved it all.
Meli is the type of heroine I e'er love in and AI story. Strong confident and just a smidgen broken in some way. I loved the backstory to her prior relationship with Celino and how she finally gets her chance for revenge.
So any other book where the male pb walks into a adult female'southward firm in a situation like this and I would have been mad at him since you know it is a flake stalkery.
"You intermission into the house of a complete stranger, force yourself into her kitchen, and advise that she should surrender her breasts to you so you can satisfy your honey dripping fetish. What woman could pass on that invitation?
Simply I've seen Meli in action and I know that while Celino fancies himself the predator in this state of affairs he is really the casualty. She could kill him at any second and that is why it never bothered me.
Celino was a predator and every predator responded to prey who seemed to run. And when she finally permit him catch her, their battle would bulldoze him out of his listen.
I was conflicted did I want kiss me or impale him kind of catastrophe. Merely in a short fourth dimension IA told a very good story and convinced me of the ending they picked.

For any Ilona Andrews fan, I would describe this volume as a merge betwixt Innkeeper's Chronicles And Subconscious Burn.
The globe-building consists of a futuristic paranormal world vibe everything that's typically monster and magical is rewritten and explained as aliens, technology, and planets. In dissimilarity to their other books where the globe provides unique situations that build into the plot... this book sadly just explained the setting of the volume.

I'm non a good man. I'one thousand a common cold-blooded, brutal, terrible bastard.
These are non the ideal words to attract and to courtroom women. But Celino Carvanna hopes that they'll work on a woman who happens to be an assassin, in item a melder named Meli.
Melders like her were an extremely rare commodity. ... In the world of gainsay implants and biochemical modifications, melders were the extraordinary natural-born freaks.
It's centuries into the future. On the planet Rada, in the lush flora of the metropolis New Delphi, the land's beauty belies the cutthroat social culture of the kinsmen. Space colonization has led to humans with enhanced abilities - the kinsmen - and these special skills take in turn elevated the bearers to wealth and power.
Silent Blade is a sci-fi tale of individual liberty bought at a high toll and the revenge exacted past the one who bore the asymmetric share of the cost. It'south a revenge fantasy wrapped up in a twisted love story.
[Meli's] god rebelled against his worshiper and he had no mercy to spare.
She channeled her frustration into the lethal osculation of the ene-ribbon.
Meanwhile Celino outgrew godhood and became a titan. The Carvannas prospered and grew under his leadership, while [her family unit] stagnated.
Now they wanted her to assassinate the human being who had doomed her.
With less than 40 pages, this brusk story packs in quite a punch. The authors accept painted an alternate world in broad strokes. They've reserved their efforts to infuse their few pages with emotional angst and melodramatic behavior. Although the latter didn't come up across every bit plausible, it is carried along by the immense say-so of the onetime. If you're a fan of the "big gesture," and so this will likely work better for y'all than for me.
Ilona Andrews are among my favorite contemporary writers. I've read all of their novels in the Kate Daniels universe and in the Hidden Legacy series, which just may exist a fully developed iteration of the kinsmen world. The main female protagonist of Silent Blade has the aforementioned attracting quality as Catalina but without the need for this ability to be magically-enhanced. The male protagonist reminds me of Mad Rogan just without the PTSD. And this world-setting is a sci-fi warm-up to that magic-based business firm society. So as a fan of IA, Silent Bract is enjoyable, and the kinsmen trilogy is a quick treat. The emotional tenor of this story is unlike what I've read in their other series; and if y'all like this, then read the rest of this series.

4 to 4 1/two stars"You're not a woman yet, Meli. But one day you will be. Y'all won't exist beautiful, but you volition be bonny and men volition flock to you. Me, your Aunt Nez, your grandmother, nosotros all take that something that makes men turn their heads and practice silly things to entice u.s.a. into their beds. Don't worry darling. He volition notice you lot one day. You volition hitting him like a brick."
And does she ever.
So, let'south see, where to begin...
Now they wanted her to assassinate the man who had doomed her. A homo she knew intimately well. A man whose optics made her heart skip a beat, despite his unintended cruelty, despite the years, despite the gulf between them and her deep, logical want to feel cypher for him.
I institute this an interesting romantic novella for a number of reasons.
First, the heroine, Meli, had good reasons for wanting vengeance against the hero, Celino, and she doesn't cave and immediately forgive just because (view spoiler)[she has feelings for him or gets a long overdue apology. Words are not enough to instantly set what's been damaged. (hide spoiler)]
A small part of her had hoped Celino would recognize her. But he didn't. That was how fiddling her being meant. She was null but a forgotten speck in his past life.
That's something that often drives me a fleck wild in these stories where the heroine has suffered for years because of the hero's actions and so with one quick explanation and side by side to no 'grovel', all that pain and sorrow is immediately forgotten with some lame excuses, an ofttimes pathetic apology, a few listen melting kisses and a fabulous ringlet in the hay that obliterates encephalon cells.
Not and so hither.
2nd, the hero is fully aware that he's non a good person only willing to be and then for her and nosotros go glimpses of light within his darkness closer to the end of the tale. In other words, there has actually been some growth and self reflection on the part of the hero as a result of (view spoiler)[his interactions with, feelings for, and loss of the heroine. (hide spoiler)]
"Why are yous hither?" she asked.
"You accept my eye. Where would I get without information technology?"
"Domicile, Celino."
"Non without what is mine."
She paused and looked at him with her velvet eyes. "I was never yours."
Third, the hero is powerful and very much accustomed to getting his way and achieving his goals. He can be ruthless, selfish, brutal and dangerous. Just he acknowledges that the heroine, a uniquely skilled assassin, is (view spoiler)[even more powerful and could easily defeat and kill him - which is not an easy thing for anyone else to do. He'd be more probable to accept them down and non think much about it. He is not emasculated or threatened on an ego level by this. He believes that her power and grace are beautiful. He watched her slice the lethal machine in half. Precise. Elegant. Economical in her movements. She was cute. And yet she didn't kill him. For days he had been at her mercy, but never once did she try to attack him. [...] he was certain he wouldn't take survived. (hide spoiler)]
I enjoyed the fact that though Meli fell in honey with Celino, it wasn't plenty for her to just of a sudden fling herself into his artillery and forget all that came before.
Nope. Not happening.
"Thank you for my freedom. I volition strive to never think of you lot again. Good day."
(view spoiler)[She needed time and altitude and to go through her ain procedure of growth, forgiveness and credence. The choice needed to exist hers, not his. Her return was not guaranteed or a foregone conclusion in his mind. She walked away without looking back. He waited, he hoped, he grew, he suffered, he changed simply aught was promised. Good. I'm tired of hearing virtually heroines who apologize when the hero's treated them like crap and/or who fall autonomously with a loving declaration, a hot tumble and that oh so orgasmic and magic touch. I love it when the hero steps upwardly and accepts that he effed upwards, when he reaps the consequences and behaves similar an adult virtually it. I besides love when the heroine actually knows her own listen and has some self respect no affair how much she loves him. I take it to mean that she acknowledges her own worth and that she gets the meaning behind the phrase, "Yous teach people how to care for you." (hibernate spoiler)]
That was believable to me and fabricated this quick tale a rather tasty and satisfying bite of goodness.
The kind of goodness I await forrad to from these authors.

The love on his office was too insta feeling. IA explains this somewhat from the words of Meli'due south mother, just I still would have liked to hear from his side what he saw in Meli. I also wondered what happened to Meli's female parent.
Meli holds the power in their relationship (even when he thinks she doesn't), and I loved it!
The world building is fabled and pretty complex because how short the story is.
The ending was as well quick a wrap up for me but... (view spoiler)[I loved that she couldn't forgive him instantly, cause years of hurt naturally take longer to heal. I loved likewise, how he changed for her. Although her male parent and brother become some comeuppance, that thread got dropped and I never constitute out what ultimately happened to them. (hibernate spoiler)]
If you desire an epilogue, the second volume has a prissy cameo of them years later with at least one kid.
safety is pretty good (view spoiler)[they both have sexual histories while apart. You hear more nearly the tall gangling blonds he favoured equally dates to events. Only of class the h is the opposite of that 'wait'. (hide spoiler)]
I listened to this on audio and information technology comes with the second volume, "Silver Shark" and another short story, "A Mere Formality". Wonderful listening!

Re-read. This novelette feels very much similar a precursor to Hidden Legacy. It feels as if here the ideas are developed and put to newspaper for the first time, that will fully manifest into a fleshed out novel with Burn for Me five years later. Non quite as fun still and due to length with a fairly simple plot. A stray little revenge story with a strong dose of romance.+*+*+
Review from 2015:
A piddling long for a short story, let's call it a novella. Romance with a licking of sci-fi. Dainty characters, one very proficient fight scene, some nice sex. Harlequinesce, silly, tacky, kitschy, feel-proficient ending with very high awww-factor. Satisfying. To be read on a rainy twenty-four hour period on the sofa with a hot cup of cocoa.

This was my second read of this book - this fourth dimension with the lovely IAA girls.Silent Blade is the first (short) book in the Kinsmen series fix in the far future where humans have colonised distant planets and created genetically enhanced human beings. Its an extremely cutthroat civilisation, where a family'south forcefulness is everything.
Meli has cutting herself off from her family to salve them farther embarrassment after she was rejected by the jerk, Celino, she had been matrimonial to since she was 10. Instead, she has chosen to further her family's interests as their assassin. She is just well-nigh to retire when her brother calls and asks her to brand one more impale - and it is the man who had rejected her.
I only took a star off this one because I had trouble with Celino. He actually deserved for Meli to impale him, such an donkey. He was 1000 times ameliorate by the end, but I constitute information technology hard to forgive his starting time. Meli, on the other hand was a snarky badass.
IA shorts are quite remarkable. They have enough going on to give the impression of full length novels, though I ever want more. But, that can be said for any of the wonderful IA books I've read.
